Dream Street Camper Recruitment

Dear HSJ Family,

Hello from Camp Dream Street! We are a speciality camp founded in 1975 with the mission that all children, regardless of their abilities, must be offered the chance to have fun, to make new friends, to achieve, to be accepted for who and what they are, and to learn from the challenges of group life. Both the children and the staff at Camp Dream Street benefit from the life-changing experiences the camp has to offer. Dream Street is a place where children with physical disabilities are given the chance to be children – not “special” children, not children with disabilities, but just children.

The camp takes place in the beginning of the summer on the grounds of Henry S. Jacobs Camp. Our counselors are members of NFTY Southern-the regional high school youth group covering the region of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, western Tennessee, Alabama (excluding Montgomery), and the Florida panhandle. Our staff is composed of counselor alumni, college students, and a robust professional and medical staff.

We hope to lean on our long standing partnership with the HSJ community to help us recruit new CAMPERS for Dream Street 2024 and beyond. Included with this letter is a copy of our recruitment flyer. We are asking anyone who may have a connection to families with kids with disabilities to spread the word! Please share our information with medical professionals, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, social workers, community organizations, or individual families!

Dream Street campers are between the ages of 8 and 14. All of our campers are children with physical disabilities. Predominant diagnoses of our campers include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, limb deficiencies, spinal cord injury, and other developmental disabilities.

Our recruitment team is happy to answer all questions or concerns. You can contact us at recruitment@dreamstreetms.org. Applications for campers are LIVE now on our website: www.dreamstreetms.org.

Dreamily Yours,

50th Reunion: November 1 – 3, 2019

50 years of anything is always cause for a celebration. 50 years of a Jewish summer camp? In Mississippi? Well, let’s just say no one expected us to still be here. A few months ago, we were so thrilled to announce the dates for Jacobs Camp’s 50th reunion in the celebration capital of the world, New Orleans, Louisiana! We tried so hard to plan in advance, to read the tea leaves (and potential football schedules), to ensure our chosen date would not conflict with any major happenings in the Deep South.

I Didn’t Want to Come to Camp

I didn’t want to come to camp. From the outside looking in, it seemed like a faraway place endorsed by my rabbi that took my sister away from me. I came to camp kicking and screaming hoping my parents wouldn’t make me come. Now here I am, a month after my fifth and final year of camp. Looking back on the amazing memories gone by, I think about how wrong that Maskilimer was.
