Opening Day and the Best Summer Yet!

by | Jun 14, 2024 | Jacobs Blog, Summer, Summer 2024

Shabbat Shalom from Jacobs Camp! Session 1 is off to an amazing start and I’m so excited to share our first week in review video with y’all. Click here to see what we’ve been up to so far!

There is nothing better than the first night of camp, when our community is finally back together, and we get to enjoy the best Fried Chicken and Banana Pudding you can find anywhere. From there, our campers have jumped right into the fun of camp – playing basketball in the new athletic complex, making friendship bracelets, playing in the lake, and swimming in the pool!

This week has been extra special at camp because we were able to celebrate Shavuot, the holiday commemorating the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai, together as a community. This is the first time in 19 years that Shavuot has coincided with the camp session. It was so much fun to celebrate and learn together as a community with a service in the newly remodeled JPAC sanctuary, special activities during Kehillah, and traditional dairy treats like cheese pizza, ice cream, and cheesecake. In true Jacobs Camp style, we even had Moses (aka Nadav!) deliver the Ten Commandments to us from the roof of the Art Room!

Our amazing Olim campers are getting a taste of everything HSJ has to offer from swimming in the pool, playing on the inflatable toys in the lake, wacky sports in the Athletic Complex, and creative arts! They have had amazing evening programs including The ‘Olim-pics’, a campout complete with s’mores, and bunk nights with their cabins!

Garin has been enjoying the pool, especially pushing their unit head, Jack Finger, in it! Garin has been boating on Lake Gary, competing in all-camp capture the flag, and uncovered secret Jacobs Camp lore as detectives!

Maskilim was very helpful in planning the Shavuot service, and they were the first group to try out the new indoor climbing wall at the Athletic Complex this week! Maskilim started Specialty Camp – Sports, Arts, and Adventure. They have had super fun evening programs too including a Pool Party, Capture the Flag, and the opportunity to solve a whodunit mystery!

T-Unit, Talmidim, tried out different specialty camps to help them decide which one to choose. Sports Specialty camp played basketball in the new Athletic Complex. In Adventure, campers mastered the art of safe fire-building in anticipation of pita Friday. Radio Specialty Camp made album covers together while they prepared to launch their inaugural podcasts!

Our Solelimers are on their way to becoming leaders at camp. They have shadowed Staff members and our Operations Crew to start learning how camp runs, and we are so excited to have them on board! Solelim also made music videos around camp, and led a terrific program for Garin campers!

Today we’re preparing for the first Shabbat of the session, which is always a highlight. We’ll start with our Shabbat walk followed by a delicious dinner of roast turkey and all the fixin’s, challah, and cherry cobbler for dessert.

We have so much fun in store, and we are so happy our children are here with us!
Shabbat shalom to all of our Jacobs Camp families!

Love,
Anna
