First Visit to Jacobs Camp – A Lasting Impression by Mark Rubin

This week marked a special milestone as I visited Henry S. Jacobs Camp for the very first time. Although I’m no stranger to Jewish summer camps—having attended one myself as a child and now sending my own kids to a camp in Georgia—this was my first opportunity to see firsthand what so many in our community lovingly refer to as the “Jacobs Magic.”

From the moment I arrived and was greeted by Jacob Fijman, the HSJ development director, I was immersed in the energy and warmth that define the Jacobs Camp experience. I spent time with campers of all ages – kids from Memphis, Birmingham, Houston, Hot Springs, and, of course, New Orleans. I even tried my hand at fishing alongside them and enjoyed the beauty (and heat!) of summer in rural Mississippi. I explored the lush campgrounds and newly constructed “Dick” Orgel Bayit and the Athletic Complex, vibrant additions to the campus that are already enhancing the camp experience for many.

What stood out most was everyone’s enthusiasm, the spirit of connection and growth that permeated every corner of camp. Seeing so many young campers smiling, making new friends, and stepping outside their comfort zones to try new activities was not only heartwarming but also deeply inspiring.

My visit was a meaningful reminder of the impact that Jewish summer camp has on a child’s life. At JCRS, we’re proud to help make those experiences possible through our need-based scholarships, ensuring that every Jewish child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive in communities like Jacobs. This summer, JCRS is providing 500 partial Jewish summer camp scholarships to children across our seven-state region, including 101 who are attending Jacobs!
