Finding Instant Friendships at Jacobs Camp: Cora’s First Summer

Coming to Jacobs Camp for the first time was really scary at first. I have been to sleepaway camp before but nothing like this. My last camp was only 1 week and wasn’t a Jewish camp. Jacobs Camp is practically a whole month – that felt like a big step! Before I got to camp, I only knew one other girl at camp, and I assumed most people were already friends, and I was nervous I’d feel left out.
On Opening Day, I felt like I belonged almost immediately! Everyone was so friendly right away. My first new friend at Jacobs Camp was Valerie. She was the first person to welcome me to camp and my cabin! She told me she’s been coming to Jacobs since Olim. She quickly introduced me to her friends, and everyone was so excited to meet me. I was surprised by how nice everyone was to each other! I didn’t feel like “the new kid” for long. I just felt like part of camp.
One of my favorite things so far has been the evening programs. It’s so cool that it’s always something different and new every night. I didn’t know what to expect, but they’ve all been so much fun. One night, we got to build forts and have a water balloon war. It was silly and crazy. We all laughed so much.
And then there’s Shabbat – I’ve never experienced anything like it before! The whole camp dresses up in white clothes, and everything feels more meaningful. My favorite part is Israeli dancing at the end of the night. My counselor Hadar helps lead it, and it’s just so upbeat and fun that it’s the best way to end a special night.
When I think about this past week, I just feel happy. A week ago, I only knew 1 person at Jacobs Camp. Now I have so many friends, done such cool activities, experienced a full Jewish environment and had so much fun! I already feel like I’m part of the Jacobs family!
This summer has already been so special, and there’s so much time left! I’m so glad I’m here.
