Closer Than Ever: My Summer in Chalutzim

Jul 22, 2025 | Friendships, Jacobs Blog, Summer 2025

My name is Izzy, and I’ve been coming to Jacobs Camp since Olim. I still remember how excited I was the summer before I came for the first time—telling all my friends about it and counting down the days. Now that I’m in the oldest unit, so much has changed.

In previous years, I mostly knew the people in my own cabin and didn’t get to know many others. But Chalutzim is different. The entire unit feels close in a way the younger units don’t. A big reason for that was our Chalutzim trip to North Carolina. Spending five days outside of camp—rooming with new people, white-water rafting, ziplining, and hiking—helped us bond quickly and deeply.

As a first session camper, I was definitely nervous about being in second session for the first time. It felt like a long stretch of time, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But it ended up being so rewarding. I got to experience a whole side of camp I’d never seen before—including all the second session Chalutzim traditions I hadn’t known about, like leading the final service, getting a Garin buddy, and the mystery of the Chalutzim secret.

One of the biggest surprises was how fast the group came together. I was worried it might be awkward joining campers who’d already been here, but it now feels like we had known each other for years. On the first night, we did a “platonic speed dating” program that helped us all connect one-on-one. That night really set the tone for how united our group has become.

I’ve learned that in Chalutzim, things feel more meaningful—like Bunk Night, which becomes something really special. It’s cool to know that younger campers are already looking forward to the same traditions I’m now a part of. Being in Chalutzim this session has made me feel more connected to camp than ever before.
